Dissertation — The William Primrose Transcriptions

Primrose’s Rise to Eminence and the Expansion of the Viola Repertoire Through His Transcriptions by LeeAnn Morgan, DMA

Primrose’s transcription repertoire was integral to his establishing and perpetuating his solo career. This dissertation includes a survey of Primrose’s transcriptions which consists of examining the following medium: Primrose viola manuscripts, printed viola sources, printed original sources and discographies. This work shows that Primrose’s encore repertoire was carefully chosen to highlight both the virtuosic possibilities and the beautiful sonorities of the viola. It was through this display of technique that he was able to catch the attention of both critics and audiences; thus promoting his career as a soloist and at the same time promoting the viola as a solo instrument. In summary, this dissertation confirms that Primrose’s transcription repertoire: helped establish and perpetuate Primrose’s career, highlighted the viola’s virtuosic possibilities, promoted the viola as a solo instrument and reflected Primrose’s editing concepts and ideals.
